Softwares generally sets your machine's IP address to fake one. So your actual IP is hidden while surfing the net. Problem with these softwares is that they limit you to one IP address and there is no possibility of chaning that IP address.

Proxies
Another way is to use the concept of proxies. In simple terms, Proxy is a middle man which takes a request from you send it to the target server, gets the response and send it back to you. So your IP address will not be visible to the world but of Proxy Server.
